Opera this weekend – Svadba (Wedding)

Information from the website is below:
Our city’s incredible opera company, Opera Philadelphia, continues to push the boundaries of the genre — first, with an overhaul of its look and mission, and now, with the introduction of a progressive new series this fall.

In addition to a full season of opera on the Avenue of the Arts starting this September, Opera Philadelphia will go well beyond its customary concert-hall environs with its new annual series of site-specific operas, Opera in the City.

With the hope of bringing opera into the communities and neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Opera in the City will kick off this November at the soon-to-open home of Fringe Arts, a spacious and adaptable performance space overlooking the Delaware River on Columbus Boulevard.

Launching the series, Opera Philadelphia, in conjunction with Fringe Arts, will debut the American premiere of Svadba–Wedding, a contemporary Serbian a cappella opera by Ana Sokolović.

The innovative piece, which blends opera with folk music, tells the story of a bride-to-be on the night before her wedding in an immersive theater-going experience. For a sneak peek, check here.

Far more than just a show, though, in addition to the incredible performance, ticket holders are also invited to join in a Balkan wedding celebration after the opera, with traditional cuisine and live Balkan dance music from the West Philadelphia Orchestra.

General admission tickets, $69, go on sale on this Wednesday, August 7, here.

One and all are invited to this Balkan bash, so don’t miss the opportunity to take part in this new operatic adventure.
