Register for KimmelSTIX to see PHILADANCO!

The Kimmel Center is Philadelphia’s place for show that extend way beyond the classical music realm. They also happen to offer student tickets for $10, which is a great deal for students. The registration process is not difficult and only requires your e-mail. I’ve already subscribed- they send out very few e-mails and they’re always informational. The link to register is here. Once you’ve registered you can check out PHILADANCO this weekend from December 7th-9th. To learn more about this dance company, check out their website here. Also, check out this description from KimmelSTIX below.

“THIS WEEKEND! “When Philadanco tours the world, it’s an art ambassador from the City of Brotherly Love.” (Philadelphia Inquirer). When they are at home, they are a mirror of the essence of Philadelphia. Commanding, accessible, powerful, global — this Philadelphia rite of passage continues to grow audiences and critical acclaim both at home and abroad. Their 2011-2012 Kimmel Center season was a sellout success, proving that Philadanco is at the top of its game. There is no better time to experience Philadanco.”

Check them out!

Awesome Show in April

This is pretty far in advance- tickets go on sale January 23rd. It looks like it would be super interesting, though. Keep this on your mind! Here’s the description and link!

“Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton’s harrowing expedition to Antarctica in 1914, Phantom Limb unites marionette puppetry, dance, film, history, and photography with contemporary music to create a stunning vision of the great arctic continent—past, present, and future. Dotted with icebergs designed by Jessica Grindstaff that rise from the ground like ghosts, Shackleton’s crew – played by half-life-size marionettes by Erik Sanko, operated by six performers atop stilts – struggles to survive in this vast landscape that incorporates an original score by Sanko, recorded by the Kronos Quartet, mixed with glacial field recordings from the company’s research trip to Antarctica; the junkyard aesthetic of Sanko’s band Skeleton Key; the stage awash floor to ceiling with photos and film from the expedition mediated by video designers Shaun Irons and Lauren Petty; dim lights by Andrew Hill that streak across the foreboding terrain; with explorative and explosive choreography by Andrea Miller; and costumes by fashion design impresarios threeASFOUR.

Putting into stark relief the power of endurance and camaraderie and the price of knowledge 69° S. mines the inherently bittersweet and complex nature of the Shackleton experience and what the future may hold for this fragile environment.”

Deal for Natural Science Museum

Grab this Groupon for half off entrance to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. Here’s the description from Groupon-

By most people’s standards, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is old — founded in 1812, it’s the oldest natural sciences institution in the Western Hemisphere. But the Academy is a baby compared to the specimens it houses, some of which date back more than 350 million years.

Explorers Stephen Long and Ferdinand Hayden’s series of western wilderness expeditions formed the foundation of the Academy’s 18-million-item collection, which it began displaying to the public in 1828. Over the subsequent 60 years, the Academy grew to three times its original size through donations, museum purchases, and daily doses of multivitamins. Now situated at 19th and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the Academy houses more than 35 dioramas of plants and animals collected during global wildlife expeditions, a live animal center with ceiling-to-floor observation windows, and nearly a hundred mollusk specimens. A tropical garden hosts live butterflies from around the world, while Dinosaur Hall contains skeletal mounts of more than 30 Mesozoic species, including a 42-foot-long T. rex.
